Henry’s Avalanche Talk: Saturday November 16, 3pm, The Snow Centre
If you’re considering heading off piste this winter, whether with or without a guide, learning about snow and avalanche safety and how to prevent accidents from happening is absolutely essential whatever your level.
Founder of Henry’s Avalanche Talk, Henry Schniewind, is hosting an ‘Essentials’ talk at The Snow Centre as part of the 2024 ORTOVOX Off-Piste Awareness Tour.
The Essentials Talk helps you answer the critical question ‘Is it safe out there?’ It explains that there is no simple yes or no answer. The right answer is it depends on you.The talk is full of exciting images, videos and stories – there’s great skiing along with close calls with danger. You’ll be taken through a risk management formula that will help you to see how skiing off-piste can be no more dangerous than the activities that you engage in each day.
Henry is a world renowned expert on snow and avalanche safety and endorsed by ANENA (The French Avalanche Association). He’s a fully qualified ski instructor and has been guiding off piste in Val d’Isere for over 30 years. Henry explains a bit about the talk: “In The Essentials talk, we go into the fundamental aspects of how to make decisions and reduce risks in the backcountry – Where you go and when, how you go down or up and how well prepared you are for a crisis. These skills are crucial to risk management and helping to make off-piste skiing as safe as driving to the resort itself … IF applied”
The HAT approach has saved lives, because it’s not just about education. It’s also all about the application of that training/experience and the tools provided to enable skiers and snowboarders to use it and make off-piste and ski touring ‘acceptably safe’
When you attend a talk you will receive a copy of Henry’s Accident Reduction card plus a Safety Rescue card. The Accident Reduction card provides you with an accident reduction framework, a ‘weapon’, to help you fight human factors’ distractions which are the origin of most accidents.
