Snowbility is an organisation that specializes in helping individuals with additional needs and rehabilitation challenges to access snow sports and in particular skiing and snowboarding. Our students often have a range of complex developmental, physical, psychological and mental health needs, including learning disabilities, autism, dyspraxia and deafness.
Through our integrated approach, students are supported to develop their skiing and snowboarding ability and engage in purposeful activities relevant to enhancing their social, emotional and communication skills, whilst improving interaction, fitness and motor skills.
Snowbility is made up of a specialized team which includes fully qualified ski and snowboarding coaches experienced in both indoor and alpine environments, as well as support staff with extensive experience in both learning disability, nursing and social care assistance. We work in partnership with the student, their family/carers and other health and social care professionals to develop a person-centred programme.
By working closely in partnership, Snowbility formulates a flexible coaching method to facilitate individuals in achieving their potential through the power of snow sports. We aim to deliver and continue to develop a culture of inclusion at all levels within the sport of skiing and snowboarding to ensure that people with additional needs are respected and valued for the contribution they make to the sport.
Snowbility uses a carefully designed orientation and de-sensitising programme for all of its students. This approach is particularly helpful in supporting our students with autism and anxiety orders to engage and fully understand the concept of skiing and snowboarding, at a pace and level appropriate to their needs. In addition to creating a person-centred programme for students, where appropriate Snowbility will encourage the significant people in that person’s life to join in the student’s coaching session and share the experience. Our dramatic results and progress have shown that individuals that take part in a snow sport such as skiing not only develop their sporting abilities on the slopes, but also benefit from enhanced social and interpersonal-communication skills which in turn help improve confidence and self-esteem.
