Packing for a holiday is always a daunting task and in many cases is left until the last minute! Ensuring you have all of the gear and layers that you need for your ski holiday can be the difference between enjoying the thrills of the slopes of the best resorts across Europe and being frozen to the bone in the freezing conditions.

Thankfully, The Snow Centre is on hand to offer the ultimate skiing checklist. By following our guide, you'll never need to ask, ‘What do I need for skiing?’ ever again. Put together a ski trip packing list that covers every layer and every piece of equipment you’ll need to enjoy a ski holiday to remember.

In this ski packing list guide, you will learn:

  • What clothing you need to bring.
  • Whether you should buy or rent equipment.
  • Some of the basic accessories you need for skiing.
  • What to pack for outside of the ski resort.

What Do I Need for a Skiing Holiday?

There is plenty to pack to complete your skiing checklist, but some of the vital things to remember are the three layers of ski clothing, your equipment and some casual wear for when you aren't racing down the slopes.

Skiing Clothing

Keeping it simple, you should have three layers of clothing when you hit the slopes. Not only will your layers keep you warm, but they will also keep you dry, ensuring you can enjoy your holiday without getting soaked in the snow every time you fall.

Your base layer should consist of warm clothing, such as thermal tops and bottoms. Next, in the middle layer, wear something fleecy or thick that will insulate you and add another layer of warmth on top. Finally, the outer layer should aim to keep you dry instead of warm. Throwing on a waterproof jacket and trousers on top will ensure you remain dry, while your underlayers keep you warm.

  • Three layers of clothing.
  • The first layer should be light thermal wear.
  • The middle layer is a thick fleece that will keep you warm.
  • The outer layer should be waterproof to keep you dry.

Skiing Equipment

Without your skiing equipment, you obviously won't be doing much skiing on your ski holiday. Aside from appropriate clothing, having all of your equipment is the next priority on your ski packing list. If you own your own skis, helmet, snow boots and goggles, be sure to pack them; however, if you need to rent equipment, worry not! Through our partnership with Intersport, you can access the highest quality ski equipment to rent for the duration of your holiday.

  • Remember to pack ski boots, helmets and goggles as well as your skis.
  • Our partner, Intersport, can supply quality skiing equipment you collect in-resort, if you need any.

Essential Basics

There are some essential items that can be easily overlooked when packing for a ski trip, providing you with comfort and convenience while out on the snow. The first basic item you will need is plenty of sunscreen. For first-time ski trippers, this may seem confusing, as you’re heading to a cold location up in the mountains. Due to the altitude and lack of shade, you are directly exposed to the sun for hours, so sun cream is as essential on the slopes as it is on the beaches of the Caribbean. A snood or balaclava provides extra warmth and protection from the snow, and a small backpack allows you to carry refreshments and snacks.

  • Suncream is essential on the slopes.
  • A balaclava adds another layer of warmth.

Off-Slope Clothing

You won’t be spending all of your time on the slopes, so for the time spent exploring your destination, you will need the appropriate clothing to enjoy some après ski. You’ll want to bring warm clothing, some casual wear such as jeans and sweaters and for when you’re back at your accommodation, some comfortable clothes like sweatpants and pyjamas. If you’re looking to take a dip in a pool or jacuzzi, then remember your swimwear.

  • Bring warm casual clothing to enjoy some après ski.
  • Pack comfortable clothing for your time back at the chalet.

Tip: Choosing the right ski clothing is just as important as remembering to pack it. Select the best layers and gear to keep you warm and dry.
