Essential Gear for Snowboarding: What You Need to Know

Starting snowboarding requires the right clothing and equipment. At The Snow Centre, we want to make sure you’re comfortable and prepared, so here’s a guide to the snowboarding gear you’ll need:

Warm Clothing

The temperature on our slopes ranges from -2°c to -6°c, so we recommend wearing one pair of thick warm socks and layered clothing. Avoid jeans and opt for a waterproof outer layer to stay dry and thinner layers to keep warm. This layered approach not only keeps you warm out on the slopes but also allows you to shed layers if you start to get too hot.

Snowboarding Gloves and Socks

Gloves are essential for any snow activity. We offer gloves and socks for purchase at both of our locations, or you can bring your own. Keeping your hands and feet warm helps maintain dexterity, preventing injury and discomfort.

Rental Options

Don’t worry if you don’t have snow gear! You can rent a snowboarding jacket and/or trousers from both of our locations.

Tip: If you plan on snowboarding often, consider investing in your own snowboarding gear to enhance your experience.

What Snowboarding Equipment is Provided?

At The Snow Centre, we provide all the essential snowboarding equipment you’ll need with our clothing and equipment hire at our Manchester and Hemel Hempstead locations, including:

•    Helmet: Helmets are mandatory for all snow activities, and helmet hire is included in your session.

•    Snowboard and Boots: Snowboard hire and snowboard boots are included in every lesson, ensuring you have the best gear for your ability level. We’ve partnered with HEAD to provide top-quality snowboarding equipment.

•    Rental Process: When you arrive, simply give our team your shoe size and height so we can set you up with the right equipment.

How to Book Your Snowboarding Lesson

New to snowboarding? Begin your snowboarding journey with a beginner snowboard lesson at either our Manchester or Hemel locations. These lessons are led by our expert instructors who teach you all of the basic snowboarding techniques before you progress through our learning journey. If you prefer personalised attention, we offer private snowboard lessons at Manchester and Hemel Hempstead, where you’ll receive one-on-one coaching.

•    Stage 1 Lessons: For beginners, this is where you’ll start. No prior snowboarding experience needed.

•    Stage 2 and Beyond: If you’ve had previous lessons, find out ‘What Stage Am I?’  to find the lesson that best matches your experience.

What to Expect During Your First Snowboarding Lesson

Your first lesson at The Snow Centre will be a memorable one. All of our snowboard lessons are taught by qualified instructors, so you’ll be in safe hands. Here's what to expect:

•    Small Group Sizes: Whether you’re in a group lesson or a private lesson, we ensure a tailored learning experience. All of our lessons are comprised of guests with similar ability, ensuring every group learns at the same pace and everyone gets the support they need.

•    Beginner-Friendly Instruction: Before you begin learning some basic techniques, instructors will introduce you to snowboard safety, explain how to use your equipment, and then help you learn essential techniques at your own pace.

•    Private Lessons: If you choose a private lesson, the instructor will work with you individually, adjusting the pace according to your comfort and progress. A private lesson is perfect for ironing out any bad habits that may creep in and for ensuring you have mastered each technique before progressing to the next stage of your learning journey.

If you’re unsure whether private lessons or group lessons would be better for your needs, be sure to check out our guide on whether private or group lessons are better or if private lessons are worth it for beginners.

How Long Does It Take to Learn Snowboarding?

Everyone learns at different speeds, but on average, adults typically need around 10 hours of lessons to reach a competent level of snowboarding. For some, that might mean progressing through Stages 1 and 2 in just one or two lessons, while others may need a few more sessions at Stage 3 to master key skills.
