Reach New Heights: What is Heli-Skiing and Heli-Boarding?

Picture the scene: the rhythmic thump of helicopter rotors echoing off granite walls, a vast expanse of diamond-dust snow stretching to the horizon, and the promise of the longest, deepest run of your life. For many, heli skiing and heli snowboarding represent the absolute pinnacle of the sport – the "bucket list" adventure that every serious rider aspires to.

But beyond the cinematic shots of professional films, what is heli-skiing exactly? Is it a high-octane stunt for the elite, or is it an achievable goal for dedicated enthusiasts?

This is your expert guide to demystifying the experience, understanding the safety requirements, and most importantly, identifying the skills you need to make the dream a reality.

What is Heli-Skiing and Heli-Snowboarding?

At its core, the definition of heli skiing is simple: it is the practice of using a helicopter to access remote, high-altitude, off-piste terrain that is unreachable by traditional ski lifts.

Instead of riding a gondola to a marked piste, the helicopter acts as your private shuttle to the summit. You are dropped off in the true backcountry – a wilderness of untracked powder snow.

Heli-Skiing vs. Heli-Snowboarding

While the term "heli ski" is the industry standard, the experience is just as popular for those on one board. Heli snowboarding follows the same principles, though boarders have a few unique considerations.

Because you are in deep, natural snow, maintaining speed on flatter "run-out" sections is vital. Most heli-operators provide "powder-specific" boards with a larger surface area to help you stay afloat in the deep stuff.

What to Expect on a Heli-Ski Trip

A heli-trip is a far cry from a day at a busy resort. It is a highly structured, professional operation focused on two things: safety and maximum "vert".

Here’s a quick rundown of what you’ll see or experience:

  • Small Groups & Expert Guides: You typically fly in groups of four or five, led by a certified lead guide.
  • The Safety Briefing: Your day begins with an intensive briefing on helicopter safety and avalanche protocols.
  • Multiple "Laps": Depending on your package, the helicopter will drop you off for several "laps" throughout the day. You’ll navigate open bowls, steep chutes, and gladed tree runs, often descending thousands of vertical feet in a single run.

Are You Technically Ready? A Readiness Checklist

Heli-skiing is a reward earned through dedication. Nature provides the perfect snow, but you must provide the technique. It is an expensive, high-risk activity that requires an honest self-assessment of your abilities.

Its not all about extreme lines and jumping crevasses though. It’s possible to enjoy Heli skiing as long as you have a good level of skiing / riding as professional guides will choose itineraries best suited to the level of the group.

Before booking a trip with a major operator, ask yourself if you meet these non-negotiable standards:

What kind of level? High intermediate to expert

What does this look like?

  • You are very comfortable skiing / riding slopes on piste 25 degrees plus.
  • Your movements are linked and coordinated
  • You turns (curves) flow together
  • You can ski / ride in a specific set corridor
  • You can manage yourself up after a fall
  • Do you have a good level of fitness to undertake longer descents

Ideally before signing up for a Heli ski experience, you should consider the above but also get some real experience in the “side country” off piste, under guidance from a qualified specialist instructor who will help develop your technique and skill.

A heli ski day can be anything from a one drop experience, to multi drops. For multi drops a higher level of fitness will be recommended.

  • Piste Mastery: Are you 100% confident and controlled on all black runs in any weather?
  • Variable Conditions: Can you handle "crust", "slush", and "heavy" snow without losing your form?
  • Powder Technique: Do you understand the balanced, centred stance and "bouncing" rhythm required for deep snow?
  • Physical Fitness: Backcountry riding is exhausting. Do you have the leg strength and cardiovascular stamina for 6 to 10 long descents in a day?

Next: The Non-Negotiable Gear for Optimum Safety

Safety in the backcountry is more of a law than a suggestion or recommendation. Every rider is required to carry the "Holy Trinity" of avalanche safety equipment and know how to use the kit. This takes practice.

  1. Avalanche Transceiver: A device worn on the body that emits a signal so you can be located (or locate others) if buried.
  2. Shovel: A collapsible, high-strength shovel for snow rescue.
  3. Probe: A foldable pole used to pinpoint a person’s exact location beneath the snow.

Most operators also provide an ABS (Avalanche Airbag System) backpack. Understanding this gear is vital, which is why organisations like Avalanche Canada or the UK’s Glenmore Lodge emphasise the importance of Avalanche Safety Training (AST) before heading off-piste.

Where to Go: The World's Best Destinations

If you're ready to start planning, these iconic locations are the gold standard for heli snowboarding and skiing:

  • British Columbia, Canada: Places like Revelstoke and Whistler offer the most established heli-operations in the world.
  • Alaska, USA: Known for its "steep and deep" terrain, Alaska is the ultimate destination for high-level Expert riders.
  • New Zealand: Offers incredible Southern Hemisphere riding with vast, open alpine bowls.

In Europe you can Heli ski in Italy, Spain and Iceland to mention a few.
